Another morning glory - easily identified

Trans-Pecos Morning glory
The Trans-Pecos Morning glory is pretty easy to identify. It's red, for one, and the flowers are no bigger than a dime. Winds around all kinds of other plants (here: catclaw acacia). The leaves are similar to the Ivy Leaf morning glory. This photo was taken in front of the dam, but you can find in other areas, especially around the water.

  1. Nice! I thought at first you had a Scarllet Creeper there, but this seems larger. Hard to tell from a photo. But I have SC photos from Sabino

  2. According to the firefly forest site:
    http://www.fireflyforest.com/flowers/1270/ipomoea-cristulata-trans-pecos-morning-glory/

The Scarlet creeper isn't found in AZ.
I'll check the official Sabino Canyon plant list (maintained by Joan Tedford), though, and get back to you.

  3. The flower Joan Tedford calls Scarlet Creeper is the same as Trans-pecos (Ipomoea cristulata). Scarletcreeper from Firefly forest is Ipomoea hederifolia, formerly Ipomoea coccinea var. hederifolia, which, confirmed by Joan's list, is not in the canyon. A rose by any other name...
